Weather on mount washington

Mount Washington, located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, is famous for its extreme and unpredictable weather. Both summer and winter visitors must be prepared for rapidly changing weather, as conditions can shift from calm to life-threatening in just minutes. The mountain’s harsh environment also serves as Minus33's testing ground for our Merino Wool clothing and accessories.

Standing at 6,288 feet (1,917 meters), it is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States. The mountain's unique geography, sitting at the intersection of major storm tracks, makes it one of the windiest places on Earth.

On April 12, 1934, the Mount Washington Summit Observatory recorded a summit wind speed of 231 mph (372 km/h), which held the record for the fastest surface wind speed observed by man for decades. The combination of high winds, freezing temperatures, and heavy snowfall makes it a challenging environment for hikers and researchers alike.

Temperatures on Mount Washington can vary dramatically throughout the year. The average annual temperature is around 27°F (-3°C), and even in summer, temperatures can drop below freezing at night. The mountain holds the record for the lowest temperature ever recorded in New Hampshire at -50°F (-46°C) in 1885. Wind chills can be even more extreme, often reaching -100°F (-73°C) or lower during winter storms.

Snowfall is abundant, averaging around 280 inches (711 cm) per year, and snow can fall even in summer. Whiteout conditions and sudden storms make the mountain notorious for its deadly weather.

Mount Washington’s extreme climate has earned it the reputation of having the "World’s Worst Weather." The Mount Washington Observatory, located at the summit, continuously monitors conditions, providing valuable data for meteorologists and climate scientists. Despite the dangers, Mount Washington remains a popular destination for hikers, climbers, and tourists, drawn to its stunning views and challenging conditions.

My feet appreciate the cushioning. Although I've never been a front of the pack runner, the socks give me hope that in my dreams I am.

That is fantastic feedback! We are so happy to hear your feet are appreciating the cushioning in the socks.
And hey, we believe in those dreams! Every run is a win, whether you're at the front of the pack or just enjoying the journey. Keep putting in the miles. You've got this! -Sierra S
